REAL WEDDING October 2009
Sarah Maddox & Hunter Shepherd
August 1, 2009
Ceremony: Faith Presbyterian Church
Reception: Inverness Country Club

Flying high after a romantic proposal in a hot air balloon, Sarah Maddox only had one request from her groom-to-be about their pending wedding; like any good Alabama born man, he wanted to get married before football season! The wedding came together with ease. Less than six months later, the couple said their vows--- and in plenty of time for Alabama football.

The Back Story
The couple met through mutual friends. Hunter was living in Atlanta and Sarah was visiting for the weekend. They were the only two in the group who didn’t know each other so they naturally started talking. At the end of the night, Hunter asked Sarah to be his date for the Alabama/Auburn game the following weekend and they’ve been together ever since.

The Proposal
One weekend when Sarah was in Atlanta visiting Hunter, he suggested they take a drive to a hunting camp about 45 minutes away to work his hunting dog. They jumped in the jeep, put the top down, grabbed the dog, and headed toward the camp. After they’d been on the road for a while, Hunter said he needed a leash for the dog so he stopped at a store and went in. Then, he went back in for a drink, again for a pack of gum, etc, etc. Sarah had no clue he was killing time. The reason? Hunter had planned a hot air balloon ride and he was talking to the pilot to check conditions. He told Sarah he overheard people in the shop talking about a hot air balloon ride nearby and told her he wanted to try it. Hunter convinced Sarah they should check it out and after a little persuasion, she agreed to go up in the balloon. After they were up for a few minutes, Hunter gave Sarah a package of gum and asked her to get a piece out. Sarah was still completely clueless that anything out of the ordinary was happening until she found a little card in the pack of gum that read:

451 days ago the Lord brought you into my life. 252 days ago I told you I loved you. Today, I am going to ask you to marry me and I will love you forever. Hunter

After Sarah said yes, she was a little sad they weren’t able to share the moment with friends and family. But Hunter had another surprise for her. As they headed back, Sarah saw that a large crowd had gathered below. As they landed, she saw her family, Hunter’s family and friends who were in on the whole thing waiting to celebrate their engagement.

Wedding & Reception Plans
Sarah got down to the details of planning a Birmingham wedding. One of the first items on Sarah’s list was the gown. She found her Augusta Jones on a trip to Nashville. Once that was off the list, she went on to select beautiful Watters & Watters in Sprite Green for the bridesmaids. A five-tier white buttercream wedding cake with the couple’s initials on the front, edible pearls, and a fondant bow was designed for Sarah’s cake. Hunter’s was a four-tier chocolate on chocolate offset square creation with handmade chocolate candies for decoration. The men opted for ultra formal white tie with black tailcoats for the evening wedding from Mr. Burch Formalwear.

Sarah’s sentimental “something borrowed” included a locket and a handkerchief that belonged to her grandmother and her “something new” which was her own embroidered handkerchief, a gift from her mother, which was used to wrap her bouquet.

Some of Sarah’s favorite wedding day moments include a private moment the couple shared before the ceremony. Hunter wasn’t supposed to see his bride so he kept his back turned and gave Sarah her wedding present, a beautiful pair of pearl and diamond earrings, which she wore for the wedding. He also gave her a letter, which she read just before her walk down the aisle. Sarah was also very happy that her grandfather and brother were able to give her away. The couple found a great band they loved and were very pleased to be able to get them for the reception where guests danced and celebrated into the night.
